J. Anthony Kosar, winner of television's "Face Off" competition on the Syfy channel, just unveiled the third annual Halloween-themed art exhibit he's curated, featuring world-renowned artists, at his Kosart Effects Studios & Gallery in Westmont.

The MALEFICIUM Dark Art Exhibition showcases the work of 46 award-winning artists from around the world, representing diverse media.

Kosar, a Lisle native, explains that MALEFICIUM is a Latin term for “mischief” and “dark art.”

"If Halloween and horror is your thing, then this is the must-see show to close the 2013 Halloween season," he said.

Kosar, instructor of Special FX classes and workshops, created MALEFICIUM in 2011.

“After two years of bringing art and Halloween together, this show is getting bigger, attracting bigger names in the dark art community, from renowned illustrators and photographers, to sculptors and Hollywood FX artists,” Kosar said.

A sampling of artists includes illustrator Jim Pavelec ("Star Wars," "World
of Warcraft," "Magic: The Gathering"); world-renowned sculptor and concept artist Jordu Schell ("Avatar," "Predator 2," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns"; and seen on the Travel Channel’s "Making Monsters," "Toy Hunter" and Syfy’s "Face Off"); award-winning illustrator and concept artist Allen Williams (Guillermo Del Toro’s "Pacific Rim" and Darren Aronofsky’s "Noah"); award-winning sculptor Thomas Kuebler ("Spectrum" and "Rue Morgue"); renowned horror photographer Joshua Hoffine ("Fangoria," "Rue Morgue," "Famous Monsters of Filmland");

Creature FX artist and fine artist Bruce D. Mitchell ("Iron Man 3," "Predators," "Resident Evil: Extinction" and Stan Winston School of Character Arts); fine art painter Travis Louie ("Hi Fructose," "Juxtapoz," "Rue Morgue," "Inked" and "Spectrum"); award-winning sculptor Tim Bruckner ("Kenner," "Gentle Giant," "DC Direct"); and award-winning sculptors The Shiflett Brothers ("Sideshow Collectibles," "Bowen Designs," "Toy Biz").

Artist Brian Busch is a Winfield native who resides in West Chicago. The complete list of artists and their biographies is on the website at

The show will run through Nov. 30, with viewings by appointment only. Art and theater teachers are invited to bring their students in for private tours. Kosart Effects Studios and Gallery is at 760 Burr Oak Drive, Westmont.
