Wheaton Park District to present Putt for Pink and Zumbathon to support breast cancer fight
By SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Wheaton Park District is helping to fight the disease with several events this October.
It begins with Putt for Pink, hosted by Wheaton’s Arrowhead Golf Club, on Monday, Oct. 21.
Bruce Stoller, director of golf at Arrowhead, explained its genesis: “The Arrowhead staff was looking through a catalog, and we saw some pink golf hole flags for October (National Breast Cancer Awareness Month), and said, ‘These are great, but what if we do more than the flags? What if we organize a special event to raise awareness about the disease and funds for breast cancer research?’”
So on Oct. 21, golfers can enjoy a round of golf knowing that 100 percent of their greens fees will go to the Cadence Health Breast Health Center in Winfield. In addition, the event will feature several special activities on the driving range, pink flags on the course, and pink merchandise bags throughout the month of October.
“We’re working on some things that are going to make this event special and fun for participants,” Stoller said. “We want them to feel like they can donate toward a great cause, while experiencing a relaxing day of golf.”
Families or organizations also have the opportunity to sponsor a hole, either to raise awareness or honor a loved one who has survived or has lost the battle with breast cancer. And for golfers – or hungry guests – who eat at the Arrowhead Restaurant and Bar that day, the restaurant will donate 10 percent of each total food bill to the Cadence Health Breast Health Center.

The second event by the Wheaton Park District will be the Zumbathon: Party for the Cure, taking place Friday, Oct. 25, at the Wheaton Community Center. Participants can enjoy a high-energy workout. Water and snacks are provided, and participants receive a free T-shirt. The event is sponsored by Advanced Healthcare Center of Wheaton.
The event runs from 7 to 8:30 pm. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $25 that day. Proceeds benefit the Cadence Health Breast Health Center.
