Author James Ferdinand Rizza is scheduled to appear at a book signing event from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Linea Hair Salon & Day Spa in Glen Ellyn. The Carol Stream resident will sign copies of the second edition of his “Children of the Swamp” novel.
Writing since he was age 13, Rizza is an adventurer and outdoorsman. He wrote “Children of the Swamp” based on his trips to Florida’s Escambia River Basin beginning in 2008.
“Children of the Swamp,” published and re-published in 2011, is the story of a poet who encounters a family of swamp dwellers and becomes obsessed with the area’s land.
Rizza said he had no intention of writing a book before traveling to Florida. But while there, he found himself going into the swamp with some of the people he met.
“When I looked out over the water, I knew this was it,” he said. “This was the subject matter for my book.”
Rizza attributes his writing success to overcoming a childhood stutter in his 20s.
“It was very hard with oral work in grade school,” he said. “I leaned heavily on my writing and learned from a young age how to make up that difference.”
The publishing house – Tate Publishing – notes the book will appeal to fishermen, outdoorsmen and nature lovers alike. To find the book, visit www.tatepublishing.com. To learn more about Linea Hair Salon & Day Spa, 518 N. Main St., visit lineasalon.com.
