By SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
Rhythm powers the Glen Ellyn Historical Society's Ragtime Ball from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in the Glen Oak Country Club. It will be a night of champagne, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, silent auction and dancing. Appearing will be the Red Rose Ragtime Band, as well as world-renowned ragtime historian and performer Richard Zimmerman.
As an added treat, Glenbard West High School student Jordan Geiersbach will entertain at the piano.
The event also honors the "Czar of Ragtime" Axel Christensen, a founding member of the country club, who composed "The Glen Oaks Rag" in 1912 in honor of his fellow golfers. Souvenir photographs of guests are part of the ball.
Glen Oak Country Club is at 21W451 Hill Ave., Glen Ellyn. Tickets cost $150 each. For reservations call 630-469-1867, Ext. 101. Visit www.glenellynhistory.com.
Sunday ragtime event
The ragtime focus continues at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, in the Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main St., with a student piano showcase, and a program by Zimmerman, the only living musician to have recorded all of Scott Joplin's rags.
Families are encouraged to bring their children to hear Chicago style ragtime; tickets cost $10 for society members, $12 for nonmembers, $5 for students.
